FOUR PROJECTS
BY CHILEAN ARTISTS
WASHINGTON, D.C.
MARCH 18-APRIL 23
1983
C.A.D.A.
Dlttbom
Downey
Jaar
Exh1bitoon Organized by Alfredo Jsar
FORWARD
AL NODAL
It 1s a great pleasure and pravilege
to present the creattve work of
six contemporary Chilean a rtists:
C.A.D.A. (Diamela Eltit, Lotty
Rosenfeld, and Ro.Ul Zurita) ,
Eugenio Dittborn, Juan Downey,
and Alfredo Jaar.
The purpose of the exhibition Is to
present new Chilean art produced
both inside Chi le and abroad (two
of the artists now live in New
York City). This show is the frst
significant expostre in the Umted
States for all of the artists, with
the exception or Juan Downey,
who is already weli..known and
highly respected 111 this country.
These artists have shown a tenacious co mmitment to the exploration of new1 esthetically provocative, historically well informed,
and socially r esponsible thO\lgh t in
the face of a social and political
climate that ls less than fe rtile.
It is therefOC'e especially heartening to view this work: it bolsters
our faith m the basic human right
of freedom of expression. No less
Importantly, this exhibition displays the intellectual excellence
and progressive viewpomt of the
contemporary visual artists of
Chile.
We are very grateful to have had
the oppor tunity to work with Alfredo Jaar, who organi zed this
project, with the other ar tists
represented here, and with the
critics who wrote the text for the
catalog. Heartfelt appreciation is
due to Helen Brunner who co.
o rdinated every aspect of the exlubit and the catalog; to the WPA
s tall fo r their enthusiastic and
able assistance; to Rob McGinnis
for t he design of the ca ta log; to
Philip Bl air, ;r. 1 for his work in
editing and transla tion; and to
our many patrons, friends, and
supporters, without whom none of
this would have been possible.
